There's no denying the sheer fun gained by playing games in two or multi player mode. Whether it's trying to beat your opponent to a pulp in Streetfighter 2, or pipping them to the post in Sega Rally, they all have that extra competitive edge that's lacking in single player games. Cooperation too can prove decisive in games such as Mario Kart, Bubble Bobble, and SWIV where both players serve different roles to ensure survival through the game. Heck, one might go as far to say multiplayer games can even bring people together who otherwise remain mere acquaintances.

That's why we here, at Skytopia have compiled the greatest selection of two or multiplayer player games so you choose the best title to play with your mates. In fact, I even asked Slashdot what they thought, so you can see general preferences rather than the relatively limited scope of our own.

Twinbee asks: I was wondering what you lot would consider the best 2+ player games of all time. Apart from games for mixed skill players, this has never been asked on Slashdot before, so it would be interesting to see. From my own experience and research, it looks as though a top 50 would include games such as Streetfighter 2, World of Warcraft, Speedball 2, Super Mario Kart, SWIV, Ikaruga, Stunt Car Racer, Super Monkey Ball, Puzzle Fighter, and Mario Party. Whether they are competitive or cooperative, Slippery slope or Perpetual comeback, 2-player or multiplayer, retro or cutting edge, I want to hear them! I would prefer MMOG games not to be included, unless there is a good deal of interaction between the people in the 'same house' (e.g. perhaps they can team up and play against the world).

It was very interesting to sit back and watch the replies flood through. In total, 279 comments were submitted, including hundreds I've never heard of, let alone played. There were a few missing though. Only I ever mentioned the spectacular Speedball 2 and SWIV. Even the mighty Streetfighter 2/Turbo hardly got a mention.

Nevertheless, we have spent hours wading through them all, and have found, with reasonably small margins of error, the best and most popular two player games of all time. We didn't just count the number of 'votes' though. Instead we took a combination of the number of games mentioned by someone and also their post's rating (each post in Slasdot is given a rating, and 5 star is the highest). The formula to find out the score for any particular game was the slashdotPostScore / (numberOfGamesMentionedByThatPersonInThatPost ^ 0.5). We believe this to be a very fair system. Of course, eventually, we will include other sources to add data to the table.
