Tamarind

Wow. I don't think anything could quite match up to the 'fruit' under review here. The Tamarind consists of a sticky, dry, pulpy fruit which is 'contained' in a long, dull brown 'pod'. Just the sight of it is enough to turn you off in disgust, but nothing could have prepared me for the profound taste sensation I was to experience.

It's truly the most boring, revolting fruit I have ever tasted. Words do not do this fruit justice, but see the review at this site which comes pretty close. I hear there's a sickly sweet version too. Spare me... [Back to top]

Rambutan

Woah, this does look weird - like a lychee that's suddenly decided to de-evolve and grow hair. Apparently, it's meant to taste like a lychee too, so let's put the two to the test.
Hmm... right, ugh, yes, it /does/ taste like a lychee and even looks like one, but there's an extra element which gives it a 'fishy' flavour. Definitely low on the scale. Stick to the lychee. [Back to top]

Dragon Fruit

The kiwi fruit's evil twin brother. Imagine if you will - rice pudding, but without the nice creamy flavour - and all the sugar taken out. This is definitely one of the most dull fruits you could hope to taste. It could also be said to taste like dirt (!) in both senses of the word. Hmmm... I've run out of good things to say about this fruit and I haven't even started on the bad points yet... [Back to top]

Judging by the results from the survey, it would seem a lot of you seem to like the dragonfruit (ranked 13th so far - has the whole world gone insane! ;-)
Something must be up though. I'll give this another trial sometime in the future as maybe the one I had was sour or something..... (shrug)

Just like the tomato (and even the cucumber), the Avocado is more of a 'subfruit' with some of the properties of a vegetable.
22% of the Avocado is pure fat - the most of any fruit!

Avocado

A strange, creamy fruit. In fact it almost tastes like nothing. Except it doesn't quite taste like nothing. There's a 'subtle' eggy/creamy/nutty flavour. This isn't necessarily always a bad thing, but for a 'fruit', it's probably not advised. Anyway, if not for the taste, you might want to try it for its novelty. Just don't expect to enjoy it much. Red currant

If there had to be a fruit that tasted like a cross between a typical citrus fruit and a poisonous plant - then this would be it. Not really meant to be eaten in its own right, it's usually used for contrast in puddings etc., but as this article rates each fruit stand-alone, then this will score fairly low. Cherries look the same, but are much bigger and tastier; eat those instead. [Back to top]

Pawpaw

'Paw' by name - poor by nature. It is in fact even more boring than a watermelon if that's possible. Suffering from the same problems that plague other fruit, it basically tastes... a bit like a vegetable. I can't quite pin it down, but maybe something like cucumber or tomato.

Well, er, the pawpaw is supposed to be the same fruit as the quite-nice-tasting papaya. There must be sub varieties, or maybe the pawpaw I had was just a bad one.

Originally called the 'tree tomato', this erm... 'fruit' was renamed to 'tamarillo' for marketing purposes (natch). 3% of the people surveyed liked the tamarillo.

Tamarillo

Also known as the "tree tomato", and tasting everything like how a tomato shouldn't. OK, well all being fair, there's a 'unique' umm... bitter mango (?) flavour. Like the tomato, it's probably best served with other food, but otherwise - generally best avoided. [Back to top]

An unusual variety of banana turns maroon / dark purple when ripe (with pinkish flesh), but true banana buffs will want to try and get hold of the 'Ice-cream' Banana. It's actually blue in color (!) and tastes like vanilla custard. Even the texture is strange - something akin to marshmallow!

Banana - overripe (often with brown patches)

Right, I know I said how each fruit would be assumed to be the best of its kind, but I'm going to make an exception here. This is not the same banana as the 'green' banana (you'll see that one separately and much higher ranked). Nope - this one's overripe, and sure as heck it lets you know it. On a side note, I've noticed that all products claiming to be 'banana' flavour always imitate the dull overripe yellow/brown banana, instead of the 'green' one. Typical... [Back to top]

What I also hate about the guava is the stupid amount of small rock hard seeds inside. Could the deep green guava taste any better?

Guava

Firstly, the version under test is the lime green/yellow version with pinkish flesh inside. There's also a version with deep green skin and green/yellow flesh too - which might very well be tastier than this.
Anyway, just like the Tamarillo, it has a slightly off-putting (smoked) tomato flavour. Cross that with a plum or something. Worth tasting again?... I'd guava not! [Back to top]

Persimmon (Sharon fruit)

A tomato shaped fruit except it has a yellowy golden colour to it. Taste is ummm.... sorta subtle peach taste, and quite a bit of the bland 'cucumber' taste, but saltier. Something like that. Interestingly though, I've been informed that the 'Fuyu Persimmon' is much tastier, so I'll look out for this. [Back to top]

Tomato

Making it into the fruit section by technical definition alone, this 'fruit' tastes more like a vegetable. Despite the low-ish mark, it comes into its own when cooked and used with other food. But as something to eat in its own right? Neah.....
Add six points on top though for the tastier 'Cherry tomato'. [Back to top]

Kumquat

Looking like a tangerine in a time warp, this tiny thing is... well a sad excuse for a lemon actually. Slightly sweeter than lemons maybe, but there's so little there that you'd have to be the size of one to attempt to enjoy it... [Back to top]

It would seem quite a few of you think I've underrated this fruit, so I've given it a second look. I discovered you're actually meant to eat the peel too - as this provides a contrast with the fruit inside.
Verdict? Well, I admit it does taste a bit better than before, and so I've ranked this a few places higher, but it still has a bitter-ish lemon/orange peel 'flavour' to it - something it could well do without. Also, someone emailed me to say that the ones they tried were sweet. I would like confirmation of this if possible.

Lemon

Surely the most bitter/acidic fruit, the humble lemon gets the award for the fruit most used as a flavour but something which is rarely eaten raw. Some like it raw (like my brother - but then he's mad ;) [Back to top]

Lime

Barely any different from the lemon unfortunately, so it's just as bitter.
Lime cordial and (especially) lime jelly always smells so nice. Can't say the same for the fruit for some reason :-/ There's an extremely unique flavour there - it's just dug real deep. Perhaps something to try after eating the miracle fruit though! [Back to top]

Clementine

Similar to the tangerine/satsuma/mandarin, but worse basically. A watered down version, one could say it is slightly 'off' (sour?) when put up against the tangerine. [Back to top]

Date

This is the first time I tried the date in its un-dried version. Looking like a strange kind of onion (or plant bulb for that matter), this weird fruit could be said to have the taste of a slightly salty watermelon or a 'subtle' version of a pear. Nothing spesh. [Back to top]

Apricot

I can't remember tasting one of these before. Shape is reminiscent of a peach. As for flavour... hmmmm... a bit of pear, plum and peach but not really as good as any of these. No actual unique taste as such. [Back to top]

There are two main varieties of melon - 'watermelons' and 'muskmelons' (such as the 'Cantaloupe' and 'Honeydew').

Melon

The heavyweight of the fruit world. Hmm.... a fairly tasteless fruit, but not bad nonetheless. Similar to the Kiwi fruit in texture and even in taste - but with all the juicy tang squeezed out. What don't I really like about the melon then? Well I can answer this question by asking melon-lovers, "what don't they like about eating plain cucumber?". No wonder it's a member of the cucurbit plant family. Very big - that's for sure.

I think I've tasted mosted of the popular types including the watermelon and canteloupe. I recently tasted the slightly more favourable 'Honey dew' melon, but it still has that typical 'cucumber' taste that seems to plague all melons. [Back to top]

Cherimoya

Also known as the 'custard apple', the cherimoya is a large pear shaped fruit, but with a green 'mottled' surface - which upon opening reveals a white avocado-esque centre. After the horrors with /that/ particular fruit, I braced myself for the worst. Hmmm... well it turned out to be quite strange, and not as bad as the avocado, but still mediocre. Taste combines a hint of avocado, with a touch of overripe banana and a pinch of pear. Hmmm indeed. Perhaps a less ripe version would have impressed me more. [Back to top]

I gave it another chance recently, and liked it more than before! Perhaps I tasted a less overripe version this time. For some reason, I noticed a subtle hint of /strawberry ice-cream/ too. No wonder it's sometimes called the ice cream fruit. Anyway, it's shot up around 15 places in the overall fruit rankings.

Mango

Delicious
Mango/peach Drink

One of the most overrated fruit I have come across, the relatively large Mango tastes quite nice in a way, with a tangy, chunky texture. Unfortunately, it also suffers a problem quite common among the less popular fruits in that it has a slight vegetable flavour. The culprit in question is the parsnip.
I haven't exactly tried every variety though, so I'll consider an upranking in future. I'm not quite sure what it's doing in the top three fruit surveyed though =P [Back to top]

I was to later find out that mangoes naturally contain a small amount of kerosene - giving a distinctly turpentine like flavour. Interestingly though, there are mangoes which have less kerosene in than others, so that only the sweet and juicy flavour shines through. I've yet to try this kind, so add or reduce the overall score accordingly...

Physalis

Also known as the 'Caped Gooseberry' or 'Goldenberry'. Tasting like a cross between a cherry and a peach with a slight hint of cucumber, this very small fruit doesn't taste bad. It could do with a shift in size though... [Back to top]

Granadilla

Another hard one to pin down. The inside 'membrane' jelly substance is similar to the passion fruit, and the taste isn't bad - kinda like a cross between a watered down kiwi fruit, fermented grapes and I think I can even detect a slight 'bubble gum' flavour too.

Unfortunately though, it suffers the same problem that plagues the Pomegranate;- the fruit or 'gel' is contained around several inedible seeds. So you spend more time extracting the fruit rather than actually eating it. [Back to top]

Passion fruit

Now first glance at this, and you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a badly bruised apple. Also, on opening, the contents look quite revolting! But the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say, and so I decided to risk biting into this number (I don't know, the things I do for you lot). Hmm.... not bad actually - kinda sickly sweet, but a very unique flavour. Lots of pips - that's for sure. [Back to top]

Lychee

This small fruit contains an extra-added unique flavour on top of an ordinary grape. Apparently, there's a more preferable version of the lychee with a deeper red shell - also recognised by the fact that there's no surplus fluid once the shell is broken. I've yet to try this kind. [Back to top]

Blueberry

Bigger than a blackcurrant, but smaller than a blackberry, the blueberry is somewhat between the two in taste quality too. It has a somewhat more neutral taste than the blackcurrant, and is more 'chunky'.

Pomegranate

Woah this does bring back memories. It is an understatement to say this is awkward to eat. The rankings for all the fruit listed on this page do /not/ take into account ease of eating (or peeling) which is why the Pomegranate scores so highly, but it would certainly score lower if this factor was taken into account.

You open the thing up and there's an inedible 'pulp skeleton' with loads of small seeds roughly on the inside. So where's the fruit you may ask? Well, believe it or not, the fruit is contained in a very small 'bag' around each seed. So all you have to do is take out each seed and painfully bite around each one. It's a bit like eating hundreds of tiny plums! Taste is a cross between red currant, cherry and orange. If Microsoft ever designed a fruit, the Pomegranate would surely be it.

Update 20:29 23/08/2006: Okay, if you want a nice juice drink, a good idea is to heavily bruise the pomegranate, being careful not to break the skin. This will break open the juice inside, and then you can make a hole in the pomegranate, and drink away! (Thanks go to Chris Shannon, for this suggestion.) [Back to top]

Papaya

Lemon shaped but longer, and with a cheesy looking skin.
I previously gave this a low rating, but have since tried one with much more flavour - and have therefore passed the "Winner of the most Insipid fruit" award to the pawpaw. The taste is akin to the melon, but with a more refined, sweeter taste.
What you don't want to do though - is accidentally bite into the pips inside. They taste like black pepper or stinging nettles, and just like nettles, they also sting your tongue - cool I know. [Back to top]

There are two main varieties of the Starfruit (also known as the 'carambola'). The other type is very sour, but it's the 'slightly sweet' version which is reviewed.

Star fruit (Carambola):

Well, it certainly looks cool enough - but how does it taste? Well, similar to a watered down pineapple or apple, and almost as crunchy.
On top of this though, there's an extra flavour creeping through... plasticine(!). Once you've 'acquired' a taste for it though, it's kinda refreshing. Ish. Oh, the peel is edible by the way. [Back to top]

It would seem not all starfruit are similar in taste, judging by someone who submitted the following survey comment:
Your description of the blimbing (carambola or starfruit) resembles nothing I've ever encountered in southeast Asia, ripe from the tree, but sure sounds like what you'd get in a New Jersey supermarket ... might as well eat wax fruit!

Despite the coconut's erm... 'non-fruitness', other 'nuts' such as the pistachio are actually fruits - can you believe...

Coconut:

One of those fruits that has more potential used as a flavour in something else rather than eaten raw in its own right. A highly unique flavour, this fruit is one of the biggest and hardest to open of fruits. Not technically a fruit, but never mind :P [Back to top]

Strange but true: Each tiny apple seed contains a minute dose of the poisonous chemical - cyanide, but you'd have to swallow tons before it started to harm you.

Apple

Let's see, we have the Red Delicious and Gala which are the most popular apple types. Then following behind, there's the Braeburn, Granny Smith, Rome Beauty, Jonagold, Pink Lady, Cameo, Red Delicious.... the list goes on. Incredibly, there are around 7000 varieties - but only about 100 of these are commercially produced.

So what do I think? Well, to be honest, fairly mundane and dull, but quite edible. Overall, a bit overrated, but then that could be my bias creeping in ;) Compared to other fruits, there's not a great deal of variation between all the different types of apple...
Having said this, it is a better fruit to eat if peeled, so add a few points in that case.

Raspberry:

A unique tasting fruit shaped similar to the blackberry. Did you know that the raspberry isn't technically one fruit - but many fruits - combining to form one compound fruit. Technically known as a 'syncarp' fruit. [Back to top]

Peach

"Peaches" - arghhh, the first thing that springs to mind is the irritating rough/furry skin! Providing you don't mind this, they have a similar to taste to a 'standard' nectarine (but maybe don't quite match up to the to the deluxe nectarines). [Back to top]

Grapefruit (white)

More grapefruit comes from Florida than the rest of the world combined!

As nice as they are, the problem with grapefruits is that they tend to leave a rather bitter taste in the mouth afterwards. This is usually thanks to the white skin sticking like a leech to the edible flesh inside. Oranges have this problem too, but not so nearly as bad the grapefruit does. I've tried out all 4 types of grapefruit now, but they do tend to vary according to how ripe they are, so ranking is tricky. I'll try my best though.
Yellow grapefruit This is the most 'boring' and 'typical' grapefruit. Quite good really, with obvious citrusy overtones, but it does leave an unpleasant bitter taste in the mouth afterwards.
White grapefruit Slightly better than the Pink grapefruit, one version I had reduced the bitter flavour to a minimum.
Red grapefruit Closer to the pink grapefruit. More sweet, though less sharp perhaps than the white grapefruit...
Pink grapefruit This is more like it. Sweeter than the average grapefruit, this is the same flavour they use for the various squash drinks available. I can certainly see why... [Back to top]

Grape (green/purple):

The seedless variety of the grape is a must if you want to stay sane. If there had to be a default flavour for a 'tangy' fruit - the grape would be it.
The purple variety is slightly preferable thanks to being a tad sweeter. [Back to top]

Blackberry

A sweet and tangy fruit very often found in back gardens or fields. The only downer being that the quality of the average blackberry is less than exceptional - with many being overripe, underripe and the occasion where you get more than you bargained for (maggots anyone? ;-/ ). One type of Fig can claim the title of being the sweetest of all fruits. 55% of it is sugar!

Fig

The dried fig tastes boring, but if you've ever tasted the fresh version, you'll find that it's one of the most subtle fruits going. Very hard to describe the flavour, but try to avoid the type of fig with a redder center, as this 'tangy' element doesn't contrast well and spoils the flavour somewhat.
Out of the hundreds of fig varieties, only around half a dozen types are commericially produced. Perhaps the most notable are the 'Calimyrna', 'Mission', 'Kadota', and 'Adriatic' Figs (see end of page for description). [Back to top]

Plum

Effectively an overgrown cherry, the plum has a nice 'chunky' texture. Fairly big, tangy, sweet, easy to eat - what more could you want? Also similar in taste to a nectarine. [Back to top]

Mangosteen

Unfortunately, the mangosteen isn't very well known, and so is poorly ranked in the survey (receiving only 53 votes out of every 2273).

Wow - another surprise. The milky/transparent colour of the fruit is weird enough, but the taste is quite... unusual - and delicious! Just like a tangerine, each mangosteen is comprised of numerous 'mini-segments'. I only wish there was more of it - each segment is small enough to make this fruit a delicacy.
As for the taste... oooh, tricky. Something like grape - but with a subtle nutty flavour. This is one fruit that's definitely worth having again. [Back to top]

Tangerine

The tangerine under scrutiny here is the one most often sold around Christmas, and is very similar is appearance and taste to the Satsuma Mandarin, and superior to the clementine. Blissfully easy to peel compared to its cousin - the orange, this sweet fruit also tastes somewhat similar, but with a slightly less tangy flavour. [Back to top]

It would appear that the tangerine is one of the most underrated fruit in the survey - surrounded by the Kumquat and Tomato. You even think the Lychee and Guava is better (!)... (yeah... right =).

Banana (yellow/green)

How a banana should taste, and not anything like the yellow/brown banana thank goodness. Everyone is used to what a banana tastes like, but it is fairly unusual in that there's not an ounce of citric-y-ness (cheers) to it - i.e. nothing like an apple/orange.

Cherry

Very nice - and similar to the plum, with their small size being their obvious drawback. erm..... they look shiny too.
Did I mention that they looked shiny?

Another massively underrated fruit this. Also known as the 'Pummelo', and the father of the grapefruit.

Pomelo!

A real surprise this. It's hardly known and even comes into the exotic/tropical category, but in taste, it combines a subtle orange, a bit of tangerine and a slight grapefruit flavour. The pomelo has the appearance of a grapefruit too, but it's sweeter, and more refined, and should dominate the supermarket shelves instead! Definitely one of the top citrus fruits - try one ASAP. Orange!!

One of the most popular fruit... and with good reason. Just like the others, this is the most 'ideal' of oranges under judgement. Well, who can resist. Very citrusy, and much like a lemon, but not as bitter, thus better.

A semi-exotic fruit, the kiwi, also known as the 'Chinese gooseberry', is awesome in its subtlety of flavour - and is superior in every way to the watermelon. A tangy, sweet pulp, with a dreamy texture, it goes without saying this fruit is highly recommended. Now all we need are watermelon-sized Kiwi fruits!

Arguably the best tasting fruit when freshly picked. Their only real drawback is the fairly small size - and the fact that they quickly go off if not eaten within a couple of days, which is why you'll rarely be able to experience the best strawberries straight from the shops. Special mention must go first to: Miracle fruit
Truly an amazing fruit - I can't wait to try this. After eating it, you'll find nothing special about it, but just try tasting a lemon afterwards... - it'll taste amazing! The usually bitter lime too will at last taste like how a lime should taste. Almost every trace of 'sourness' will have vanished from the most sour of fruit... and what's more - this taste bud altering effect remains for half an hour. For unknown reasons, the FDA has banned the fruit from the US, despite it actually being completely harmless. If true, it's pretty depressing, considering how this fruit could change our lifestyle for the better. Visit this site for more info regarding the miracle fruit. Durian (the 'King' of fruit): Some love it, some hate it. I've yet to try it :)
Atemoya: /very/ sweet apparently
Hautbois/Green strawberry: (very nice apparently)
Feijoa: (apparently very nice tasting like a cross between pineapple and strawberry)
Dwarf sumach: (Very big/tasty fruit apparently). Except one surveyee didn't seem to think so. I quote: "Dwarf sumaches suck!!!". To find out for sure, you'll have to wait for the definitive review.
Elderberry: (rather unpleasant apparently)
Fuchsia splendens: (superior lemon?)
Jaboticaba: 'delicious'
Cranberry: (should be cooked). Apparently, ripe cranberries will bounce, hence it's alternative name 'bounceberry'.
Meyer Lemon: A cross between a lemon and mandarin orange.
Tangelo: A cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit - tangier than a tangerine, and sweeter than a grapefruit.
Tangor: Also known as the 'temple orange'. It looks like a tangerine but tastes like an orange.
Jackfruit: Quote from this site: "Huge, green or yellow compound fruit containing large bulbs of yellow, banana-pineapple flavored flesh. Texture is either like raw oysters or crisp and almost crunchy.". Someone in the poll also claimed it was delicious.
Longan: Claimed very delicious.
Aratiles: A fruit?

Champagne Grapes: Intensly sweet grapes that pop in your mouth, these grapes are practically as small as seeds (0.5cm diameter)! See novia.com.sg for a picture and more info.

Arbutus: More familiarly known to the Chinese as 'Yang Mei', this deep red fruit sourish-sweet fruit has a rather interesting furry texture that resembles the broccoli crown. See novia.com.sg for a picture and more info.

Cashew and pistachio: Yes, they are technically subfruit too, coming from the same family as the Mango (Anacardiaceae).
Black Sapote: Also known as the chocolate fruit!
White sapote: Quote from this site: "Roundish thin-skinned fruit, light green to orange-yellow; yellow or white inside with a custard-like texture and peach or banana-like taste. Seeds look like large orange seeds."
Murcott: Quote from this site: "In Florida called Honey. Flesh orange colored. Tender, very juicy, rich tangerine flavor."
Different types of fig: (condensed description from California Figs:
The Calimyrna Fig: Nut-like flavour with tender, golden skin, and apparently the favourite, though I can't vouch for this.
The Mission Fig: Distinctive flavor, with a deep purple shade.
The Kadota Fig: Thick-skinned with a beautiful creamy amber color when ripe.
The Adriatic Fig: The most common variety. This fig has a golden colour and high sugar content.
Alpine strawberry: Smaller than the strawberry, and with a shrivelled look, the alpine strawberry tastes like strawberry candy, being much sweeter than a regular Strawberry. You can find the fruit by climbing a mountain in the wild.(thanks go to Ian Carpenter for the info)
Bunch berry (name?): A red fruit which tastes like nothing. Around 5-7mm in diameter. (thanks go to Ian Carpenter for the info).
Tayberries: Cross between a raspberry and blackberry with a musky flavor.
Waldo Blackberries: Large, very juicy and very sweet.
Hachiya persimmons: Nicer than normal persimmons apparently. Best eaten when very ripe. (thanks go to Steve Wright for the info).
